Attendance awareness program yields results

Preliminary results are in from Tucson Unified School District’s attendance program and they are encouraging!

» 80% of TUSD schools improved their September attendance
» 5,353 fewer absences—255 fewer per day
» 64% of kindergarten classes improved attendance
» 95% of kindergarten classes that participated in the “Bee at School!” contest improved attendance

On September 1, 2015, Mayor Rothschild held a press conference at Hollinger K-8, a TUSD school, to kick off Attendance Awareness Month. Joining him were Superintendents from all four participating school districts—Amphi, Flowing Wells, TUSD and Sunnyside—as well as the Dean of the University of Arizona College of Education and the President and CEO of United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona.

School attendance is important, and problems can start as early as kindergarten. Students who miss just two days of school a month—18 days a year—are less likely to graduate.

“Whatever the age is, school attendance is critical,” said Mayor Rothschild. “You can’t keep up if you’re not there. But what we’re going to do in this initiative is give special focus to the early grades, because this is when children learn to read, building the foundation for academic success.”
